    • Review of 2008

2008 is a very special year for me. There are too many things happened. I've stayed in four completely different environment, and a part of my dream has come true, and I'm now in a totally different living style. Too many stories to tell.

In the beginning of 2008, I was stilling doing research. I restudy HITS and PageRank, and tried to get some new ideas. The progress was very slow, and I forgot what else I've done during January to March. I only remembered that I took some time to prepare the apply of the internship program in Google, Taiwan, and to think whether I should study in PhD in American. Although I got a stronger desire on 2/02 for persuading the degree of PhD, the desire was getting smaller as time went by. I also learned Rails and finished a case simultaneously during the winter vocation, and finished reading the whole book of "Java Puzzle". "Java Puzzle" is a really good book that teched me many tips in Java. It's a pity that I almost forgot what I learned because I had long time not programmed in Java.

    • Memory Function

When I was a boy, I had very good memory. For example, when I played Chinese chess with a friend of my brother, he messed up all chesses because he would lose. After that, I replaced every chess back to its right position without any consideration. I didn’t know why, but I just remembered their positions naturally. Also, I read many books in my childhood and remembered many poems, proverbs and stories.

It was pity that I didn’t realize that any function would be degenerated when it doesn’t be used for a long time. When I was a senior high school student, I hated to remember many boring things. I thought that the most important abilities were thinking and inference, so what I needed was to remember the root and how to derive everything from the root. From that moment, my ability of memorizing things was degenerating very soon. Now I can’t even remember a cell phone number.

In the beginning of noting the degenerated memory, I didn’t feel bad because I thought that the space of human's brain was limited. Therefore, we needed to clean some garbage and store more useful stuff. But when the degeneration became very serious, I knew that having bad memory was a really problem, so I retrained my memory recently. Although recalling something makes me more tired than other actions such as inference or analysis, I still try to memory stuff and recall old one. Maybe it’s my illusion, now I feel better than before. I mean, I can remember more things than before.

    • The Story of ARIA Ends

As the third season ARIA (animation) is on air, the original work in comic is just over. When I heard this news, I felt a little lost. As I was a senior college student, sometimes I felt pressures. I always found new challenge things, and made me have full of things to avoid wasting time. Therefore, I’d like to find a way to relax my mind. I posted a message on an animations and comics discussion board in bbs.gamer.com.tw; “Can any one recommend me a work that can make people have peaceful minds?” I asked in the message. Magically, almost everybody who replied me said that ARIA was the best choice, so I took their recommendations.

First time I watched ARIA (animation), I found the tempo in this story is really slow. Soaking in the fantasy world happened to give me a short period of time to take a rest; I could throw all plans away temporarily, and got back to fight in the real world with more power. The images, music, characters, and stories of ARIA were charming. I admitted that ARIA was not a perfect work, but it was a great work, especially for busy people such as me.

After the first experience with ARIA, I started to read the original work, comics, and listened to the dramas. Of course, I also watched the second season animation. They all brought me a happy time. I understand that someday the world of ARIA will finish, but I don’t expect that it happens so soon. Although I felt a little lost in the beginning, now I am fine to view this fact. As Alicia said to Akari, the true happiness must be incomparable; however, the happiness we feel now is the greatest fortune. Therefore, let’s confront what is about to change someday and cherish the wonderful moment now.

    • Facing Criticism at the Top

In Chinese idioms, people said “Replace a new brain when replacing one’s position.” Usually, we use this sentence to give managers backhanded compliments. Staffs always think their managers are stupid and hard to buy their advices. They don’t like their managers’ rule and think their organization directs a wrong way, but few people provide their opinions. This phenomenon seems abnormal but happens everywhere. The weirdest point is that every manager was a staff before, so what happens after they were promoted?

One of the columns in the Advanced magazine, “Facing Criticism at the Top”, discusses a similar problem in a different view. It’s said that we think good managers should face criticism against them; however, after collecting some questionnaires, the counterintuitive result is that the higher position managers are, the lower ratio of them can receive criticisms. One possible reason is that after promoting to higher positions, people think that they’ve done good jobs or they are much better than other coworkers, and therefore the criticisms may be wrong.

Reading this column, I’m thinking whether I have done the same mistakes or not. Sometimes, I think people who give me advices are weaker than me, so I don’t take their advices. Moreover, even when they are stronger than me, I think they don’t face the same situation as mine, so their advices may not be suitable in my case. In fact, I cannot receive all advices every time; I need to distinguish the useful and useless parts in each advice. However, if I could eliminate my personal emotional view, I would have more valuable advices to consider. On top of that, respecting others’ opinions would gain more respects from others.

    • Regular Daily Life

Although I often find some new special things to do, regular daily life is very attractive to me. For example, get up at 8, study in English for two hours, study in mathematics for two hours, and then the morning is over. I like this style of life; however, it’s hard for me to achieve.

Recently, I go to the bed at 0 a.m. and fall into sleep with listening to English dramas, “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya”. This is a small step toward to my perfect daily life. It would be better if I could go to the bed at 11 a.m.; I’m still trying. The problem is that I usually get up at 10 a.m. which is a little late. When I can get up at 8 a.m., I can probably go to the bed earlier.

In the past, I schedule different kinds of things everyday. Now I find that the mess schedule is not a good idea to follow. I turn it into a simpler one: Let each kind of thing be done in each specific time. Also, get the most important things done first. With the two principles in mind, I decide to learn English and mathematics in the morning since I seldom spend time learning them in the past years. I know they are the most important, but learning English and mathematics are often not hurry, and thus I learn them with little time. The result is that my abilities about English and mathematics are the same as the ones several years ago.

    • Analysis, Hypotheses and Experiments

Yesterday I read the book, “Advice for a Young Investigator”. The author said that the progress of studying science takes three steps. observations, hypotheses and experiments. First, we need to observe our target such as stars, animals, people, etc. Then, we provide our hypotheses about why some facts happen and how our targets move. Last but not least, we conduct experiments to prove or disprove our hypotheses. No matter what kinds of sciences we study in, the progress is similar.

Interestingly, the author points that a hypothesis is useless if it cannot be proved or disproved. Although this idea is quite simple, it shocks me. Sometimes I feel that my hypotheses are hard to prove, and they annoy me a lot. For example, I’m studying the ranking of web pages or the ratings of movies. I think there should be some other ways to rank these things; however, ranking methods are hard to evaluate. The fact is that everybody can easily propose a new way to rank, but nobody can evaluate it. Maybe there is always an absolutely correct answer in nature, but there is not, in humans. This phenomenon bothers me for a long time, but it’s also the interesting part of data generated by humans.

Another useful advice from this book is that find out the problems from the real data analysis. It’s a simple idea again, but it is not that obviously in computer science. In computer science, researchers can easily generate synthetic data from simulators. Sometimes researchers are lack of real data such as the real-time traffic flow; they can only generate it by their simulators. Therefore, sometimes they may claim a new problem from their own imaginations. I did similar things several times, too. In the end, I cannot make sure what the impact of my research to the world is even if my experiments show that my idea works. Some researchers illustrate many examples to convince us that someday another study will use our result, and finally many researchers’ efforts will be combined together and create a big successful result. I do believe these scientific histories, but sometimes I doubt that some studies including mine are not useful pieces to a success.

    • Playing Basketball

Since I was a senior student in college, I restarted to play basketball again. I chose basketball as my exercise because it would not be boring to exercise with friends. Most of the players were my roommates, and there were some from our classmates. After we graduated from the college, playing basketball together had an additional meaning for us: to meet friends.

We have continued to play for a long period until the last summer vocation. During that period, since we were all busy and the weather was too hot to stand. The basketball game was stopped for several months. Then, after I finished parts of my master thesis, I thought we needed to keep playing basketball again. Playing basketball together can help us exercise and meet regularly; if you could kill two birds with one stone, why not to do it?

Therefore, we started to play basketball again since last November; however, there was some small different. Some of our players attended less frequently. We faced a serious problem: we didn’t have enough members to play a normal game. Coincidently, a friend who I knew by co-working previously joined us. Moreover, he brought many his basketball team members to play with us. The good news was that we finally had enough players; however, the bad news was that they were all come from the team of our department – which means they had very good skills in basketball. Then, we couldn’t play and chat simultaneously; instead, we have more exercise now, and chat after the game ends.

    • Keep a Good Habit

When I was a high school student, I read an essay which said that what the author learned in his college life is to make a good habit. Except his good habit, the other things he learned in the college is little helpful to his job.

I understand this principle in my early life. For example, I’m lucky that I am used to collect data and think before trusting what I read and heard, even when I was a boy. At the beginning I adopted this principle in mathematics. As I am getting older, I adopt this principle for more types of things. This habit helps me build up a good self-learning ability which is proved to be useful in my life.

However, I cannot make up my mind to keep another good habit, getting up early and going to bed early. As I am getting older, I realize that what great people said is correct: we cannot finish a great job without a robust body, so the most important thing to do is keeping a regular life and doing exercises. Maybe I give myself too much freedom to follow a healthy schedule. Once I go to bed late, I cannot get up early in the next morning, and this leads to that I cannot fall into asleep even I suddenly make up my mind to go to bed early.

    • Review of 2007

Last year, I wrote the article "Review of 2006", and recently I found that it’s interesting to reread it after several months. Therefore, I decide to write this kind of article again.

Same as last year, I look back my diaries, and found that I didn’t do any special things in January except that I attended an English camp with two weeks. In the camp, I knew the teacher Magar who is intelligent, humor and good at speaking. I came to visit him for revising my English diary in the next semester. It’s terrific that I keep that habit for a whole semester. I felt that my writing was improved during that period.
