2008 is a very special year for me. There are too many things happened. I've stayed in four completely different environment, and a part of my dream has come true, and I'm now in a totally different living style. Too many stories to tell.
In the beginning of 2008, I was stilling doing research. I restudy HITS and PageRank, and tried to get some new ideas. The progress was very slow, and I forgot what else I've done during January to March. I only remembered that I took some time to prepare the apply of the internship program in Google, Taiwan, and to think whether I should study in PhD in American. Although I got a stronger desire on 2/02 for persuading the degree of PhD, the desire was getting smaller as time went by. I also learned Rails and finished a case simultaneously during the winter vocation, and finished reading the whole book of "Java Puzzle". "Java Puzzle" is a really good book that teched me many tips in Java. It's a pity that I almost forgot what I learned because I had long time not programmed in Java.
In the end of March, Google, Taiwan sent me the notification of interview after their campus campaign. Then after about one-month process, I got the internship program. Then I worked in Google, Taiwan during July and November. It's a terrific experience. I learned so many things there that I cannot digest all things. I tried to moderate my steps to fit the Google's style. I took about two to three months to build up my working style in Google and got not bad performance. It's a pity that when I finally thought I can contribute more, the time was almost up. Working in Google, Taiwan not only brings to me many technical knowledges, but also taught me how to be a good employer I learned a lot from Googlers such as how to manage the team, how to work with other and how to be positive and have passion to your job.
The other important thing related to the short Google life was that I broke my right angle on my second day of the internship program. I went to play basketball with some Googlers. However, I didn't wear a basketball shoes and thus I fell down in a defense. Then, my right foot cannot walk during the whole July. This is the first time that I had such a serious hurt. It's very very inconvenient with one foot. The only good side effect is that I got some pectoral muscle because I needed to use crutches everyday.
About my research life, I concentrated on it in May again. This time I focused on the search result under particular users' perspective. For example, what do scientists think funny? or what do engineers think useful? I tried many methods and conducted the experiments with the real data that sampled from delicious.com. But the result is very unreasonable. I still think it's an interesting and useful problem, but I need to solve it with more time and more caution.
Because my first paper about spatial joint clustering was accepted by PAKDD'08, I went to Osaka, Japan to joint the conference on 5/20. I decided to stay 9 days and played 6 days in Osaka and Kyoto alone. It's a very special experience for me. I knew many members in my adviser's adviser's lab in the conference. This is the first time I chatted research with other researchers in the same area. I also chatted with some students in China. Learning new ideas from sciences is always interesting, but studying by oneself for a long time is not interesting all the time.
After the conference, I visited some famous places and took some pictures just as other travelers. I also met some new foreigners. After finishing the travel by myself in Japan, I found that travel by oneself was not very hard and was interesting. Maybe I'll do that again some day.
When I back to Taiwan, I focused on my master thesis. Otherwise, I cannot graduated before the end of June. With the support of my adviser, I finished the master oral exam, but I needed to revise my thesis. Because I started my internship program in Google, Taiwan and I broke my right angle, the revise progress is very slow, and finally I graduated in September.
After the internship program of Google, I had a whole free week. I bought and played many PC games made by Falcom, and then went to Taichung for my army service. It's a very bad experience. I'm glad that I pass the uncomfortable month. Then, I went to ITRI for my new life in the next three years.
Review the past of my student life, I'm comfortable with that. I got some experience in research, and got some experience in Google, Taiwan. I also play with my good friends frequently. We play basketball in the weekend, and play boardgame in the Wednesday night. I have such a good time ever during the final student life. I'm still thinking what I want to be. Hope I can find the answer and insist my road in the future. Also hope that I can find my Miss Right this time.
